A lot of what you want seems like it could be achieved using maintenance |

@tonyaellie Yes - I definitely see where you're going and thank you for the info. That would solve the issue of batteries in a device or something like that which solves one of the issues. How would you approach removing an expired item like something that is no longer usable past a date? The edit option allows you to edit the maintenance schedule or delete it but not delete the item altogether. Is there a different way to do that without having to find the specific item? Maybe instead of the features I mentioned the feature could be distilled down to adding an option for deleting the parent object of the maintenance item when you are viewing the maintenance details. |

I don't have a lot of items that I want to control warranty. I simple use the warranty field and in the warranty details I write that this is an expiration date and mark the item with a label pointing out that it is an item that have an expiration date. Its not perfect but it fit my needs. Some of the items are exactly batteries. It doesn't filter showing which items already expired nor control these items I just want to know the expiration date. |

Wouldn't you be able to use the archive toggle to hide them while still having the record that you had the item? |

For my use case, I don't need to know that I had something. These are all great suggestions. I think for my requirements, tonyaellie had a lot of great suggestions that will cover pretty much what I'm looking for. I was unable to get the email notification working, though. I went through the docs on the HomeBox and shoutrrr sites but couldn't make that work so that's really the only open item for me at this point. |

Please note we're converting this issue into a discussion as per our new procedures/policies. You can read more about that in our announcement #712 |

I'll use this field to record the food's expiration date so I can keep an eye on it before it goes bad. |

What is the problem you are trying to solve with this feature?
Add "expiration date" management to the app at an item level.
Some items might contain batteries, etc. that could expire. Having a way to manage this would make this tool useful to an even larger user base.
What is the solution you are proposing?
All of these items are the same feature, I just tried to break the user stories out so it's obvious what the ask is.
When entering items into the system that contain perishable items like long-shelf-life food items, batteries, etc.
It would be helpful to be able to include an expiration date for each specific item
so that users can know when it's time to revisit the item and make take necessary actions on the physical item or update the expiration date.
When a user periodically reviews items in Homebox
It would be helpful to have a feature that displays a sortable list of items with expiration dates
So that you can have a bird's-eye view of the state of items with a shelf life and easy access to limited remediation actions like updating the date or deleting the item.
For items that have an associated expiration date in the system
It would be helpful to receive a system generated notification (email?) when an item reaches its expiration date
so that users can address the physical items and update the Homebox record appropriately.
Expiration date could also be referred to as "Action date" or something similar in case you don't want to be stuck with the concept of expiration.
At the core, this is probably what these things would look like:
Add a new feature to easily display in table form and allow simple management of items that have expiration dates. By simple I mean a quick delete button to remove the item from inventory or an option to change the expiration date in the table.
Notify a user when an item is expiring or has expired based on a predefined lead time configured in settings via a method like email.
Add a new field the system would monitor that contains an expiration date.
