Problem installing tailwindcss

Everytime I try install Tailwindcss I get this error:

I think the issue may be due to the Tailwind version. Version 4 does not use npx tailwindcss init. Please verify your Tailwind version and install it according to the Tailwind documentation.

Thank you! I've tried both 4.0 and the version before that, but nothing works and the same error-message apear. But since I'm new at this, I'll try again. :)

I'm getting the same error.
I tried two separate Windows and two Linux separate machines. All of them show the same error.
Is there any fix?

The init command no longer exists in v4. Consider checking the installation documentation that is most relevant to your project to integrate Tailwind v4.

Thank you all! My problem was that the earlier version didn’t work for me. I installed according to documemtation for Tailwind CLI version 4.0 and now it works! :)

i am having issue resolving my problem since i have tried adding tailwindcss and postcss in my react app with vite but there's no possible installation method that meets my problem

You shouldn't need to use PostCSS since Tailwind v4 has a dedicated Vite integration package. Consider providing more details on the problem you are experiencing.

There is a problem wtih v4. I am facing the same issue then I reverted to v3.14.7 everything running fine. I could generate the tailwind.config.js file running the "npx init" command. Maybe they removed the support for init command in v4.

we are facing above issue because of tailwind version update,
we can solve it using following new steps:

Step 1 : Enter following command.
npm install tailwindcss @tailwindcss/vite

Step 2 :Update vite.config.js

import tailwindcss from '@tailwindcss/vite'

export default defineConfig({

Step 3 :Add import to your CSS file

Step 4 : Start the Development Server
npm run dev

And also intellisense not working on vs code.

Correct me if i am wrong but I think there is no need for the config file in the latest version until unless you want customize something. In case of shad cn we can just skip that part where they are saying to use command npx tailwindcss init -p command as it just creates 2 config files for tailwind and post css and just write some default config inside it. In the newer version we dont need to specify the default config. (In case you want to customize something just create the files manually and you will be fine)

Tailwind v3 install instructions no longer work.

npm install -D tailwindcss
npx tailwindcss init

The above produces the same error others have reported. I note the init command doesn't work in v4, but this error exists with v3.

Hi there, I've been using the standalone CLI for some time without a hitch. As of 4.0, the current documented install process for the CLI does not work - as stated by wongjn, tailwindcss init no longer exists. The documentation still includes the init command however.

I've reverted to a pre-4.0 version as it's not clear if 4.0 still supports or will still support the standalone CLI option.

You should be able to follow the integration guide for the Tailwind CLI but without the npm install step, since that is replaced with the standalone executable.
