Performance anomalies on `epoll` and `poll` backends

Under significant load, the `epoll` and `poll` backends exhibit temporary performance drops where they spend additional time doing some unknown work which causes perf spikes.

Will eventually take a profile and investigate but this was evident when running heavy loading using a benchmarking version of zzz.
