Guest Shell packaging EOL CentOS Stream 8 repos (Apr 2025)

Hello,
From README page I've hit a brickwall pretty much at the start

bash-4.4# yum install git python3

Throws out the error

Warning: failed loading '/etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo', skipping.

Errors during downloading metadata for repository 'appstream':

• Curl error (6): Couldn't resolve host name for http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=8-stream&arch=x86_64&repo=AppStream&infra=stock [Could not resolve host: mirrorlist.centos.org]
  Error: Failed to download metadata for repo 'appstream': Cannot prepare internal mirrorlist: Curl error (6): Couldn't resolve host name for http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=8-stream&arch=x86_64&repo=AppStream&infra=stock [Could not resolve host: mirrorlist.centos.org]

I can't run the commands on the ARM page either.

The shell can resolve centos.org just fine
bash-4.4# ping centos.org
PING centos.org (81.171.33.201) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from ip-81.171.33.201.centos.org (81.171.33.201): icmp_seq=1 ttl=45 time=18.0 ms

Does it mean something has moved location?

Something to do with centos being EOL maybe?
Files available elsewhere?

Hi there, as you correctly pointed out, mirrorlist.centos.org was retired after EoL. The quickest way you could go is probably use vault.centos.org as a replacement. You'll have to tweak the content of /etc/yum.repos.d/, something along the lines of what is described here https://www.linuxcnf.com/2022/07/how-to-resolve-yum-repo-mirror-list.html

Let me know if you can progress in this way. Since guestshell for IOS-XE hasn't been updated in a while (NX-OS's was instead rebased to RockyLinux) I am planning for a radical alternative solution that won't depend on it going forward, but it's not available yet.
