Terrakube v3 - In Progress

Terrakube v3 is the next major version for Terrakube. Adding here some ideas. Feel free to add in this discussion more ideas and pros/cons

Technical

• Migrate api, registry and executor to a single component. (written in Golang if possible)
• Make UI responsive (Main features should work in PC/Tablet. Some features should still work in Mobile (Like run a job, create workspace, approve plan, etc) For compatibility probably some components won't work well in mobile devices (state diagram, templates editor)
• Allow to run Terrakube in desktop (macos,windows,Linux)
• Create a go-client and reuse the same in the Terraform provider and Cobra

Functional

• Add support to run other platforms apart from Terraform and Open Tofu. Biceps/Arm Templates, Pulumi, etc
• Refactor Terrakube extensions to make it portable and include ui/api part

I quite like the idea of supporting other IaC tools other than Terraform and OpenToFu.

Just out of curiosity, why go-lang, why not Rust? Or any other languages?

Additionally is it necessary to have a desktop version?

I wish the V3 could:

1. Improve the integration with VCS providers, for example the way Atlantis does https://github.com/orgs/AzBuilder/discussions/1030
2. Provider Registry? There seems already some code, but didn't see the UI supports it.
3. Possibilities to integrate with K8S GitOps tools such as Flux or Argo?
4. Potentially more test coverage?
5. Possible to encrypt secrets, tokens stored in Database?

Regarding your second question about providers, I implemented the Terraform provider a longgggg time ago, you can use it but you need to use send all the information directly to the API, we never added anything in the UI and to be honest because nobody ask for the provider feature or even created an issue so we never improved it, I am not even sure if someone is using it.

If you want to use it you can do the following:

Let add the random provider version 3.01 to terrakube, we can get the information from this endpoints

You can change the URL from the above paramaters and use a URL that you control, I was using the terraform registry url for example purposes

Now in your terraform code you can have something like this:

Terraform has created a lock file .terraform.lock.hcl to record the provider
selections it made above. Include this file in your version control repository
so that Terraform can guarantee to make the same selections by default when
you run "terraform init" in the future.

Terraform has been successfully initialized!

You may now begin working with Terraform. Try running "terraform plan" to see
any changes that are required for your infrastructure. All Terraform commands
should now work.

If you ever set or change modules or backend configuration for Terraform,
rerun this command to reinitialize your working directory. If you forget, other
commands will detect it and remind you to do so if necessary.

• Option of creating terrakube/terraform resources via k8s custom resources (controllers/operators)

What about implementing a more advance webhook feature ?
As of now we are sending a status to github which is kind of a binary state either in success or in failure. I'm thinking maybe switch to check runs which allow for more granular states along with the ability to trigger those check runs on pull_request event ?

Changing from JAVA -> Go for 3.x sounds like an ambitions idea, i'm personally no JAVA fan, but is there a reasoning behind it?

Creating a Go-client for use within the provider does sound like a good idea, the current provider is a little flaky ( currently looking into it myself to see if i can lend a hand stabilizing it a little. and maybe add a few tests as well )

A few things on my whishlist:

Versioned API specs ( to avoid breaking clients using the apis )
Better errorhandling on API endpoints

When it comes to features, most of what is needed is already there, i think what is really needed is a little polish rather than adding more features.

Only feature that is missing to me is to be able to trigger plans when PRs are opened/updated from github.

I am closing this discussion, I am not planing to migrate all the project to a different language, I don't think it worth the effort to do it because it is like creating a new project from scratch
