Thinking about this some more, I actually think it is better to keep it. Even though it never triggers in the current codebase, it makes the code more robust to future changes that might make it possible to hit this case in the future. How about adding a comment that explains this instead? |

The removed code would never run, as once this
self.shutdown = true;runs, the while loop doesn't run any further so this check was redundant.
