You don't actually need to write a custom adapter for Azure OpenAI in Cognee. Cognee already supports Azure OpenAI as an LLM provider if you configure it according to the official docs.

Specifically set LLM_PROVIDER="openai" in your .env not a custom "azure_openai" enum.

Prefix your LLM_MODEL with azure/… to tell cognee it's an Azure deployment

Set the matching LLM_ENDPOINT to your Azure OpenAI deployment url and include the correct api version.

The main reason your custom provider wasn't being picked up is that the core llm factory in Cognee only recognizes a few fixed provider names openai, gemini, anthropic, etc. unless you update that enum and all the places it's referenced, cognee won't see "azure_openai" as valid.

So, two options:

1. use the supported pattern: set LLM_PROVIDER="openai" and prefix your model with azure/... works with what you already validated.

2. Keep the custom adapter: but then you need to add "azure_openai" to the provider enum and wire it into the factory code everywhere.
