the console is getting spammed with the error

Failed to retrieve remote version. If the server is behind a proxy, make sure it's configured correctly.

Reproduction

1. do all the config stuff. (exept caddy as i use my own proxy but just use localhost for now)

This indicates a problem with connecting to the database on startup, which I was able to recreate. I've updated the error message to make this clearer.

If you're using a container manager such as Docker to host the database, try listing the processes with docker ps to make sure it is running. It should be hosted on port 8000, you can check this by visiting http://localhost:8000 which should redirect to the SurrealDB website.

If you're sure you started the database but can't access it or it seems to be not running, the database probably crashed while starting. Permissions issues tend to be the most common cause of this, if the database can't access the data/surreal folder it will fail to start. See if you can find the logs for the database and send them here – if you're using a container manager, they can be accessed with a command such as docker compose logs database. Healthy logs should look something like this:
