Non github plugin source #27

Hi there,
I have been trying to use a custom plugin which we developed ( based on our internal system architecture and therefor security reasons are concerned ) and i have had no luck using a self-hosted GitLab instance. Is it possible to use some other source other than github as source of a plugin? And is it possible to use authentication when connecting to plugin source (e.g. github or gitlab)?
Also i have not yet found any documentation saying we need to use github ( explicitly ) for our plugin but also i have not yet found any opposites also,
