What does the Template box do when adding torrents?

Hi All, I recently started using Transmission Remote GUI and can't workout how to use the template box when adding torrents. I read in Issue #1069 that it's for automatically setting the location but I don't really understand how this works.
The tooltip text that appears when you hover over it suggests entering the likes of *.mkv as the template but I don't understand how this relates to the destination. Can I configure it so all files matching that template will go to a special folder for .mkv files? If so how? Sorry if I'm being stupid, couldn't find this information online and wasn't able to find much in the application relating to this other than the template box its self.
