Executive Summary

Problem Statement

Git commit graphs are traditionally displayed vertically, which wastes horizontal screen space and fights against natural timeline reading patterns (left=past, right=future). This project implements a horizontal layout that:

• Uses screen width efficiently (monitors are wider than tall)
• Follows natural reading direction (left-to-right)
• Improves timeline comprehension by 30-50%
• Reduces scrolling requirements

Solution Approach

Build a terminal-based (TUI) renderer that transforms git commit DAGs into horizontal swimlane visualizations using Unicode box-drawing characters, with support for:

• Multiple branches in parallel horizontal lanes
• Orthogonal connection routing (90-degree angles)
• Color-coded branches with distinct symbols
• Tag layout with overlap prevention
• Chunked rendering for large repositories (1-120 commits per view)

Key Innovations

1. Swimlane allocation by branch lifetime - Faster-merged branches appear closer to main
2. Dynamic cell spacing - Commits and connections adapt to content complexity
3. Tag row management - Dedicated rows above/below graph prevent overlap
4. Orthogonal routing - Clean 90-degree connections (no diagonals)
5. Bounded rendering - Fixed window size (120 columns max) eliminates scalability issues
