How does licensing work?

Where such explicit notice is given, source code is licensed Apache License 2.0 which is a permissive OSI-approved license with very few limitations.

I'm thinking about using this in a commercial product; does this mean I need to give notice/ask for permission somehow before using? Just wanted to double check.

The explicit notice is, if you look in source files at the top it says something like

• Licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the "License");
• you may not use this file except in compliance with the License.
• You may obtain a copy of the License at

So it just means that the default license is the TOS of Github (minimal license to view files) but the explicit mention of Apache License means it is also licensed under Apache License.

The overall implication is:

• You can use most source files and binaries compiled from source files very permissively (close to zero restrictions)
• You cannot redistribute non-verbatim logos, texts, documentation, examples, Makefiles because these are only under the minimal Github TOS license.

Basically, do not mimic this repo with non-verbatim copies, but otherwise, do whatever you want.
