Why does stencil= produce a character array instead of a number array?

I've been exploring Uiua for a couple days now. I ran into this oddity when trying to find double letters in a string:

Input

⧈="aabc" # Unexpected stencil behavior
=@a@a

⧈-"aabc" # Expected stencil behavior for comparison
-@a@a

Output (bottom of stack first)

"\x01\0\0"
1
[0 1 1]
0

I would have expected the first row to produce [1 0 0], since the function = on its own produces a numeric output in row 2. Can someone help me with what's going on here? Perhaps some sort of type coercion but if so why?
