Better Handling and Notification of Automatic Upgrade Failures

Summary

We experienced failed automatic upgrades on our Cloud environment, both reporting “An unknown error occurred.” Because Cloud manages these upgrades automatically, we weren’t aware of the issue until we manually checked. There were no logs available (0 entries in the upgrade log), and the root cause turned out to be the site running out of space.

Feature Suggestion

Improve the visibility and response process for failed automatic upgrades.

Possible Enhancements

• If an automatic upgrade fails, automatically alert Umbraco Support (and the project owner).
• Support could then attempt a quick initial diagnosis or notify the customer with potential causes.
• Include better diagnostic messages in the Cloud Portal (e.g. “Upgrade failed due to low disk space” rather than “Unknown error”).
• Optionally, log upgrade attempts in a dedicated section within the Cloud Dashboard.

• Improves reliability and transparency for automated upgrades.
• Prevents customers from unknowingly running on outdated versions for long periods.
• Reduces support friction — customers don’t have to discover and report upgrade issues themselves.
