Type of Feature
User Experience (UX)
Problem or Use Case
When reviewing past memos, users often want to expand on a topic, add a new thought, or follow up on an idea without losing the connection to the original memo. Currently, there is no quick way to create a new memo that is automatically linked to an existing one. Users have to manually copy the reference, tag, or link, which is time-consuming and disrupts workflow.
This feature would help users maintain context and build threads of related notes, improving knowledge management and personal organization.
Proposed Solution
Add a “Create follow-up note” option (e.g., via a button or menu item) when viewing a memo. Clicking it would:
- Open the new memo editor with a pre-filled link or reference to the original memo
- Allow the user to edit the new note before saving
- After saving, the new memo would be visually marked as a follow-up, and both memos could be linked in the UI (e.g., show a thread or relationship)
This would make it easy to build connected notes while keeping the interface clean and intuitive.
Alternatives Considered
Using search to find related memos by text content — this only works if memos share keywords, which is unreliable and misses explicit links
Additional Context
This is similar to “reply” or “thread” functionality in forums or note-taking apps like Obsidian (backlinks) or Roam Research (block references). It would enhance Memos as a personal knowledge base tool.
