ls --color doesn't work when TERM is konsole-256color

I'm on kUbuntu 25.10, and just got switched to rust coreutils.

I immediately noticed that ls stopped syntax highlighting.

I have rather large LS_COLORS directive:

And while it works well, if I set TERM to xterm-256color, it doesn't when I use more correct konsole-256color.

I thought that to check if you support (and how many) colors, you simply use colors property from term*:

It depends, because TERM=.*256-color specifies support for ANSI 256 color space, and COLORTERM for 24-bit (aka regular hex colors). There are only a couple of terminals supporting ANSI256 and not 24 bit and these are Terminal.App and another one I can't recall; definitely not Konsole. I'll try to patch support for it, but exporting export COLORTERM="truecolor" on your shellrc should fix it in the meantime (ugh mumbles mumbles damm konsole).

Hmmm .. not sure I see why konsole is "damn" - worked for me always, without any problems.

But anyway - tried with COLORTERM=truecolor, and nothing changed.

My test was simple:

I was just complaining, Konsole is awesome and I do actually use it lol, it's just that it seemed to be noncomforming for a second. It seems it's a logic bug of ours then, so I apologize to Konsole and I'll take care of it. There's multiple places in the codebase where we are apparently checking for colors independently, so I'll unify them into The One True Chosen Color Detection Algorithm™. Also, I'd like to thank you for your bug reports, they are quite thorough and you're providing a lot of info, so ty for that!

Hey, that's great, we could use some help! However, we really would need to identify the different places of the codebase where we are using true color, ANSI 256 or just old ANSI escape codes. Ideally, then we would have to make a whole utility for that so we have typed colors across the codebase and an API to transparently display colors on all representations depending on the system environment. I would strongly advocate for having true color as the default representation because it is the superset of all other colors spaces and it's trivial to interpolate between them. Color detection goes a follows: on Windows and WSL, it's always true color; on macOS and Linux it's the same usual logic. I have dictated most this, so forgive me if there's something that doesn't make sense, I tried to correct the obvious. I don't have much time right now but I'll be available starting this Wednesday.
