Why do I need this extension?

Hi.
I'm currently learning C and trying to set up my computer. Maybe I'll make a mistake somewhere, maybe my question will be stupid, I'm sorry in advance.

1. I installed VS Build Tools so that I have the standard libraries
2. I installed LLVM to use clang and added everything needed to the Path

But for some reason I can't set up launch.json to use lldb until I install this extension. Why is this happening?

lldb in this case is the id of this particular implementation of VSCode debug adapter interface. There are other extensions that also use LLDB debugger, but they use different ids.

Do I understand correctly that the debug adapter works as a layer between vscode and the debugger?
VSCode -> debug adapter ->LLDB

If so, does this extension install its own LLDB, or does it use the one already installed on the system?

Yes, it bundles its own copy of LLDB, though there's an option to use an external one.
