If that happens, uninstall explorer patcher. Check the wiki for how to do that if you don't know how.

I'm on Windows 11 version 22H2 and am experiencing the same error like @jogiicke. My windows updated very recently about 10 minutes beforehand, so suspect linked to recent update. I had to uninstall ExplorerPatcher for now.

Keenly waiting a fix. If I can help test things in any way I'm happy to do so. This is such an excellent program, I rely on it a lot. Thank you to the developers for what you do :)

Check your windows version and build number to be sure you didn't install a preview update. Those are not supported because Microsoft doesn't provide symbols to download for them.

Deleting the following registry key as per this thread then reinstalling fixed the issue for me :)

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ExplorerPatcher

I lost some of my prior configuration settings as expected, but no big deal, easily fixed.

ExplorerPatcher 22621.1992.56.3 running on Windows 11 build 10.0.22621.2134 With downloaded symbols seems to be working correctly 🎉 , even with Windows 10 style taskbar and Do not change the taskbar context menu setting disabled.

Windows updates left untouched.

Uninstall it if you want to use explorer patcher and don't install preview updates in the future: https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher/wiki/Symbols

In the settings app, untick "Get the latest updates as soon as available" so that preview updates are not automatically installed.

All preview updates are then shown as download and install and are never automatically installed if you have the above unticked.

Preview updates are also not fully tested by Microsoft and thus could have bugs.

Preview updates are not supported by EP.

Followed the above and instead of getting the ExplorerPatcher Crash dialog box. Windows returned a Critical Error message that stated that the Start Menu was unavailable and Widows would try and fix it at next Logon, then forced a logoff.

My build does not list KB5028254 as installed, but it does for 2023-08 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5029351) but this one is not listed in the Uninstall Updates list. So do not know how to remove it

Tried the link and it appeared to work, no error messages, but it is still listed in the Update History so I assume it has not uninstalled. I will just have to wait until the next Stable build

Try running winver. It will show you the windows version and build so you can then check if the update was uninstalled.

The history of installing windows updates in the settings app is just another log and can be cleared while the update still is technically installed. You can only be sure what windows updates were installed by going into the control panel. From there the only time an update will not be shown is when you have uninstalled it.

Installing a new windows 11 update (24H2, OS Build 26100.4202) causes Explorer to start repeatedly crash. I switched to the windows 11 taskbar and it worked fine so i switched back to the Windows 10 (Explorer Patcher) Taskbar then explorer started to crash again. Does anybody know a fix?

check if you enabled the option register as shell extension, disable it by opening up the EP properties application, go to File Explorer, and untick Register as shell extension.
