Description:
Currently, when positioning the taskbar on the left or right side of the screen using ExplorerPatcher, the minimum width is constrained to accommodate at least two columns of system tray icons. This limits the taskbar from being resized to a thinner, more compact form — unlike when the taskbar is positioned at the top or bottom, where a single row of system tray icons allows for a slimmer layout.
Requested Enhancement:
Introduce an option within ExplorerPatcher to:
Allow users to reduce the minimum width of the taskbar when positioned vertically (left or right sides of the screen)
Provide an optional "collapsed system tray" mode where tray icons are hidden behind a single icon or expandable button, similar to the hidden icons arrow seen in classic Windows behavior
Maintain compatibility and stability with existing ExplorerPatcher features
Rationale:
Enables a cleaner, more space-efficient vertical taskbar setup
Provides consistency with slimmer taskbar options available for top/bottom placement
Improves usability for users with ultrawide monitors or those preferring vertical layouts with maximum desktop space
Aligns with user expectations from previous versions of Windows where greater taskbar flexibility existed
Additional Notes:
I have attempted to hide individual system tray icons to reduce taskbar width, but the minimum enforced width persists
If a full collapse isn't feasible, consider an adjustable width setting or registry flag to override the current hard-coded limit
Thank you for considering this enhancement! Happy to provide testing feedback if needed.
