Error while trying to build vector on Ubuntu instance in Google Cloud

I am following the steps in publish.yml:

I am logged in as root user.
I have cloned the vector repo at /root

Issues encountered and fixed:

1. First step works completely fine (sudo -E bash scripts/environment/bootstrap-ubuntu-20.04.sh)
   But running bash scripts/environment/prepare.sh gives rust not found error
   This was fixed by adding the /root/.cargo/bin to the PATH before running prepare.sh
2. prepare.sh gives error in installing datadog => Fixed by manually installing it

Current issue:

1. Running make package-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu-all is giving this error

Rustc version on system:

Rustup default:

I need to build a custom image, any help on this would be appreciated

Hey! Could you provide the complete build log? I think there is likely to be context higher up that is missing.

Ostensibly it is make release-docker but it requires all of the package artifacts (debian and tarballs) to have been created locally. You could probably modify the scripts/build-docker.sh to build just the images you want.

Definitely open to PRs here to make this process easier :)

@jszwedko I have made the changes and built a binary, i was wondering how to debug dev changes after running the binary. I have added warn statements in the code and need to run this in ecs as I am making changes to aws_ecs_metrics source.

If you make local changes and re-run the whole package plus image build process that should do it. This is reminding me that there is a Tiltfile you could consider using if you just want to test out changes in a local k8s cluster.

Yeah but i cannot see the warn statements printing which i have put in for debug. Okay I'll check the Tiltfile.

Hmm, warn statements should show up with the default log level. It sounds like maybe it isn't pulling in your changes for some reason.
