Running scripts at build-time that use modules

Currently I have the following webpack configuration in my next.config.js:

  webpack: (config, { isServer }) => {
    if (isServer) {
      require('./scripts/generate-xml');
    }

  // some other things

  return config;
}

Instead of calling a special script I'd like to call a function of a file that is part of my React / Next codebase and therefore uses ES Modules. is that possible?
