mutate: difference btw populateCache and just returning data from a function?

Given this updateTodo:

const updateTodo = () => fetch('/api/todos/1', {
  method: 'PATCH',
  body: JSON.stringify({ completed: true })
})

is there any difference between using populateCache

mutate(
  '/api/todos', updateTodo, {
    populateCache: (updatedTodo, todos) => {
      const filteredTodos = todos.filter(todo => todo.id !== '1')
      return [...filteredTodos, updatedTodo]
    }
  }
)

and this?

mutate(
  "/api/todos", async (todos) => {
    const updatedTodo = await updateTodo();
    const filteredTodos = todos.filter((todo) => todo.id !== "1");
    return [...filteredTodos, updatedTodo];
  }
);

Both seem to give the same result.
