Roadmap for plyr

Hello Video.js team,

I’m currently using Plyr in my web application and noticed the announcement that Video.js v10 aims to unify Plyr and other players, with GA planned for March 2026. I appreciate the transparency in the roadmap.

I’d like to request clarification on the following points regarding Plyr with regards of video.js v10:

• Maintenance: Will Plyr continue to be maintained as a standalone project, or will its development be phased out?
• Support timeline: Is there a defined timeline for how long Plyr will receive updates, bug fixes, or security patches?

This information would help me update our stakeholders and plan ahead of the migration to video.js.

Maintenance: Will Plyr continue to be maintained as a standalone project, or will its development be phased out?

As much as we’d genuinely love to actively develop everything, we simply can’t. Video.js v10 is a ground-up rebuild and it’s where the team’s focus and energy is going right now. We’re also a pretty small team with big goals. One of the reasons we’re excited about bringing these player ecosystems together in v10 is so we can sustainably maintain and evolve one modern platform, instead of spreading ourselves thin across multiple separate codebases.

The good news is that Plyr isn’t going to disappear, but you should expect it to be in more of a very minimal maintenance mode going forward (PRs welcome!). We don’t expect to be doing major feature work in Plyr while v10 is the priority.

Support timeline: Is there a defined timeline for how long Plyr will receive updates, bug fixes, or security patches?

We don’t have a formal “end-of-support” date we can promise today. Practically speaking, while we push toward v10 beta and GA, Plyr updates will be best-effort depending on team bandwidth.

If you’re planning ahead, the safest guidance is: plan a migration path to Video.js v10 during 2026, and consider adopting the v10 beta for new work once it fits your requirements.

Also one small timeline clarification: End of Feb to early March 2026 is the current target for v10 beta, and GA is targeted for mid-2026 (not March).
