The following services are missing from the Virtualmin Server Status Widget

• Postgrey
• FirewallD
• fail2ban

Postgrey maybe we would add as it's configured by Virtualmin, but not FirewallD or Fail2ban. That status console is really only intended for Virtualmin-related servers.

No, they should not be added to the status console since they are not directly related to Virtualmin servers. For Fail2ban and FirewallD, we could use separate panels on the dashboard to show module stats when enabled.

Not another widget 😄 I still think my idea of combing Servers Status and System Monitors is better. Less code. you only need one status widget.

This widget would have best of both worlds, stop/start/restart buttons, status icon, optional the admins can enable email notifications. One thing that I have not identified before is you can have a reset monitors button that resets the monitors to the default virtualmin setup, also as another option you could make it so the virtualmin monitors could not be disabled whihc is seperate to them sending notifications.

TL;DR merging the 2 would fix all kinds of issue and reduce code, this is my 2¢

You need to understand that each Webmin module has its own logic to display system information on the dashboard. They (modules) don’t interact with each other to be able to combine output in any reasonable way.

Didn't expect this 😄 . I assumed the combined module would be less code that the 2 modules combined.

I get this. Modules do their own thing based on the system and their own code.

From me as an end user: "merging" the code and features into one module is what I propose, not 2 individual modules interacting with each other. 1 Widget, 1 module for the end user to configure, not 2 doing nearly the same thing.

Server status and monitoring are for me so closely related they should be in the same widget and module. The System Monitor is monitoring the various Server Status.

I do appreciate that Server Status is a Virtualmin only widget, but I dont think this precludes it from being rolled into the System Monitor widget or a module by another name.

Lastly, there is not feature in the Server Status widget that cannot be put in the System Monitor module/widget.

The System Monitor, which shows system information on the dashboard, is not enabled by default. You need to enable it manually for it to be displayed in module config.

This does not mean it cannot have this default status changed. I know this is how has been in the past. I think monitoring should be on by default including sending out emails to the admin. It is easy to turn them off if you know about them. Now that a default email address has been implemented by jamie I think this is even more valid.

I really doubt we can merge those panels the way you suggest. Let's wait and see what Jamie thinks.

I do agree a bit that we are duplicating logic here. Maybe we should do away with the "Status" panel entirely, and add to the "System and Server Status" panel buttons to restart servers? This would require expanding the capabilities of Webmin's status module, but I think it would be worth doing.

Maybe. But the way it is now, "System and Server Status" would look crowded because of the web and SSL monitors, along with others that are completely unrelated to Virtualmin. If we made sysinfo configurable so we could choose which monitors to display and add start/stop buttons like we currently have, it might work. I can take a look at this if you agree with the workflow.

For reference this was my System Monitors widget mockup. I have not done any mockups of the backend.

We should also check if 'Local' is the only column for all monitors and completely hide the 'On host' column if it is.

Agreed, we can remove that "Local" column if it's redundant.

Also, on a fresh Virtualmin install, we can have the installer only setup status monitors for services relevant to Virtualmin. Then it will be no more crowded than it is currently..

• The column is not redundant. I think @iliaross was saying if all of the monitors were local then hide the column.
• I think the column should be kept.
• The monitors can monitor remote systems.
