IconLayer / TextLayer not rendering under GlobeView (non-Mercator projection)

Hello Deckgl Team

When using GlobeView in deck.gl, the IconLayer and TextLayer do not render. The same layers display correctly when using the default MapView (Mercator projection). No errors are thrown, but the layers remain invisible.
Observed behavior:
Nothing is displayed for IconLayer / TextLayer under GlobeView. No console errors.
Environment:

Is the layer definitely not rendering, or is it behind the globe and then being culled?

Not sure about OP, but I've just run into the same issue using: react-map-gl/maplibre, @deck.gl/mapbox. The TextLayer appears briefly, but then seems to be occluded by the globe.

I've created a minimally reproducible example at https://github.com/anotherstarburst/deckgl-globe-bug - available on Github pages at https://anotherstarburst.github.io/deckgl-globe-bug/?PROJECTION=globe . In this example the manifestation is slightly different - the text only fully disappears after you drag the globe ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for confirming! I tested as well, and I can reproduce the issue.

With Mapbox + @deck.gl/mapbox, the TextLayer/IconLayer do not render correctly under globe projection (they either disappear immediately or after interaction).

With MapLibre, I don’t see this problem — the text/icons render fine on the globe.

What’s strange is that ScenegraphLayer works perfectly even with a very large number of objects (100K+) on the globe.

I’ll prepare a minimal test case and share it on GitHub shortly so it’s easier to compare the two setups.

This seems to be the root cause, presumably discarding triangles that don't face the camera:

deck.gl/modules/mapbox/src/deck-utils.ts

As a temporary workaround, setting this in Icon/TextLayer resolves the issue:

However there are still some z-fighting issues between the text and the globe.

I'm able to reproduce these issues with the TextLayer and text elements in the GeoJsonLayer. I'm also observing the upside down text when billboard is false mentioned in open-aviation/tangram#44 (comment)

We could customize the cullMode parameter per-layer rather than apply it to everything, but that seems like a bandaid solution. Any ideas @Pessimistress or @felixpalmer?
