Description
Describe the bug
Hello, I don't know if this is an issue with open-vm-tools or with vmware, but I am officially exhausted.
I run Ubuntu 24.04.2 on VMware Workstation pro 17.6.3 on a windows 10 host
all versions of the above software are the most updated versions.
I installed the latest version of open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-desktop on my ubuntu VM from ubuntu repoistory
the VM freezes generally after I use the VM a little bit, sometimes when I switch to the host to do something, and then go back to the VM.
the most recruiting errors are:
vmx GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox-dnd timed out.
vmx Vix: [guestCommands.c:1943]: Error VIX_E_TOOLS_NOT_RUNNING in VMAutomationTranslateGuestRpcError(): VMware Tools are not running in the guest
there is also this entry that shows that the vmware tools are indeed installed
vmx Guest: toolbox: Version: 12.4.5.49651 (build-23787635)
this is not a problem of RAM since i have enough ram, and gave to the VM 6 GB of RAM, graphics drivers in the host are updated to the latest, 3d acceleration is disabled, client side mitigations are disabled, and also I disabled the drag and drop functionallity in case this would help, but it didn't
**Hyper-V is not disabled, this is the last resort I will use although I prefer to not, but I don't understand why it doesn't function well with Hyper-V
Reproduction steps
- Download and install VMware workstation Pro 17.6.3 (better on windows 10 host)
- download the Ubuntu 24.04.2 iso image
- install ubuntu on vmware workstation pro through the iso file
- after installation of ubuntu, install vmware tools through:
sudo apt install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop - restart the VM
- try to switch between guest to host a lot of times, or just wait for it to freeze
note: this may not happen to everyone
Expected behavior
The Ubuntu VM should run without freezing
