steam xtrace hack not working?

My steam still opens then immediately crashes. Maybe I am not using it as intended?

My steps

git clone https://github.com/vsyrjala/xtrace.git
cd xtrace
cat README
./configure
make
sudo make install
which xtrace # confirm it is the one just installed under /usr/local
xtrace
# open new terminal
steam
# observe crash

You need to run at least xtrace -k because xtrace stops after the first connection, which is the steam updater window.

That is no guarantee for success though, I have the issue that steam tries to open a window with a 24bit visual with 30 bit depth.
