Describe the problem

This is an ONIX to MARC 21 mapping question raised by the National Library of Finland. As part of their metadata workflows, they receive ONIX data from publishers that must be transformed into MARC records.

For Schema.org accessModeSufficient values, the MARC 21 Fields column states "no equivalent". However, accessModeSufficient textual - and the corresponding ONIX codelist 196 code 52 - are essential accessibility information. The Display Guide identifies this as central metadata for describing the accessibility of a digital publication.

The current situation creates a gap in the crosswalk:

  • There is no subfield in MARC 21 field 341 corresponding to accessModeSufficient.
  • These are controlled vocabulary terms, not free text, which makes field 532 unsuitable.

Describe the fix or new feature you propose

Provide guidance on how ONIX 196:52 and Schema accessModeSufficient textual should be handled when mapping to MARC 21. The goal is to avoid loss of key accessibility metadata during conversion.
