I have no idea what you are doing, which version are you using, and how did you arrive at this error. Demo example works, if you follow the demo, it might work for you. I am not sure I can help you.

Experienced a similar issue and it was caused by the layer in question being actively dragged and meanwhile the source layer being removed from the map by some other code (fix was to prevent that)
