How to pass on (application) variables to routes, settings files?

Based on a language file I need to pass application variables on to the routes file so I also can set translated paths.
When I put those in onapplicationstart the application variables can't be read in the routes file as the application scope is loaded after the routes file?
When I set the application variables at the top on the routes file it works.

So the question is, what is the right approach to set this up, like this or am I missing some build in possibilities?
