session history to hedge against failure

I was in the middle of developing a new MCP interface when Claude went hard against it's limits. Later I tried to "Continue" from where it paused but that failed. When I tried to reopen the session, I got a complaint that it could not be reopened.
A history of my inputs to Claude and all the outputs (is that even possible?) would guard against that.
A progress meter-like readout about how close the current session is to its limits would be great. My newbie thought is that the essential elements of the current session could be captured in a way that might inform a new session? That would be my cue to tie off the current session to do an orderly shutdown, and generate the continuation data. Maybe a readout about whether upgrading my subscription would help. I definitely would upgrade to have completed that last instruction and carry on with additional work.
