read_multiple_files only returns metadata in ChatGPT

When calling read_multiple_files through ChatGPT (Connectors, developer mode), the tool response surfaced to the model contains only metadata for each file.

Example (from ChatGPT tool inspector):

In contrast, calling the same tool on the same MCP server from another MCP client returns the metadata plus the full file contents, as expected per the spec:

Other tools like read_file do return full contents correctly in ChatGPT, so maybe ChatGPT expects the read_multiple_files response to follow a particular structure that differs from what DC currently emits, causing only the metadata portion to be surfaced?

How do you test in ChatGPT? Some kind of proxy/tunnel way?

Exactly, I'm using Tailscale Funnel to serve DC through the Supergateway proxy. The DC tools I use work great this way in ChatGPT, all except read_multiple_files for some reason. Painful.

Hopefully you can chase this down. I'm up for a call if you'd like more detail.

We also did something similar internally to test with chatgpt but for now paused rolling official support.

Need to block time somewhere to test myself what happens
I remember in developer mode ChatGPT was finicky and sometimes refusing to register mcp with "not secure" messages.

Can't promise when I will get to checking out the fix

Same thing happened to me but rage clicking fixed it somehow and it's been solid since. If you've got the stomach for it, skipping auth will let you test fast.
