Very slow admin dashboard

We’ve received multiple reports from merchants indicating that the Google for WooCommerce plugin is causing a noticeable slowdown in the WordPress admin dashboard (approximately a 3-second delay or more). In all reported cases, the admin dashboard performance returns to normal immediately after the plugin is disabled. Several merchants have also referenced similar issues reported in the WordPress support forum.

The consistent improvement in dashboard speed when the plugin is deactivated suggests there may be an underlying performance issue.

I just independently discovered this myself when troubleshooting (with xdebug profiling and kcachegrind) why our woocommerce admin dashboard seemed so sluggish.

In my case, I resolved it by installing the native protobuf extension. I'm not sure exactly when it started on our dashboard. If it's a recent change, installing the native protobuf extension might not be addressing the root cause of too many protobuf calls.

I've encountered this problem as well. The admin panel has a significant load delay when using this plugin.

After some debugging I have managed to narrow it down to the filter google_for_woocommerce_admin_menu_notification_count which is being run on every admin page load when Google for WooCommerce is enabled and configured.

I've temporarily solved the issue by disabling the code responsible for getting the notification count for the admin menu:

I suspect that the performance overhead can be remedied by implementing a caching mechanism for that function.

Have created a support ticket on wp.org with a backtrace if useful.

It appears the plugin is looking up a Google API for Google Ad recommendations. No notification is actually shown but the lookups are still made on each page request.
