Missing address line 1 error

Description

After upgrading to version 9.7

When a new customer attempt to palace an order, the order fails with an error message " Payment failed: Missing required customer field: address->line1 Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed."

When I check the stratus of the payment intent in my stripe dashboard, it seems that the payment intent was never created and passed through to stripe. The transaction information is not there.

When the checkout screen appears with the error message, all the customer's address information is no longer appearing even though it was entered at the time of the original submission

When I roll back to 9.6, the problem does not occur. Therefore, the bug was introduced in your latest version. The older version 9.6 is running on the site so O can continue business.

Steps to reproduce

1. Go to any product
2. Add the product to your cart
3. Go through the checkout process
4. Click submit.

I suspect that this issue may be related to the WooCommerce Address Book plugin, which is available from WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/plugins/woo-address-book/, but the site is running version 3.0.2, which is available from https://www.crosspeaksoftware.com/downloads/woocommerce-address-book/. (There is also https://github.com/crosspeaksoftware/woo-address-book, but the releases there don't seem to include 3.0.2.)

I've asked on the forum thread to test without that plugin enabled, as I suspect the way the plugin handles addresses is not something we're expecting or working with as we should.

I have reproduced the issue with WooCommerce Address Book 3.0.2.12 for a new user checking out with a test card. There is definitely something unexpected happening, as we are not seeing any billing details in the user meta, and when I try to instantiate a WC_Customer instance for the user from the payment gateway code, that is also showing empty billing details. I think there may be a timing problem here, as the user data should be persisted by this time.

I'll keep digging, but need to stop for today.

Apologies. I went through the steps of deactivating the plugins one by one but must have missed this. I can confirm also that this appears to the be issue. That being said, that you for looking into this.

I have spent a little bit more time on this and I have some clearer findings when testing with the following settings:

• Settings -> Accounts & Privacy
  • "Enable guest checkout" is disabled
  • "Enable login during checkout" is enabled
  • Allow customers to create an account
    • "After checkout" is disabled (as it is not permitted)
    • "During checkout" is enabled
    • "On "My account" page" is disabled
  • "Send password setup link" is enabled

In all cases below, I am testing with a new user that doesn't have an account yet.

With WooCommerce Address Book disabled

When our code runs as part of payment processing, both the WP_User and WC_Customer data for the newly created user include billing details, with the user fields being accessible via get_user_meta() and the latter via the various getter methods in WC_Customer.

With WooCommerce Address Book 3.0.2.12 enabled

When our code runs as part of payment processing, both the WP_User and WC_Customer data for the newly created user don't include any of the relevant billing address details. These fields seem to be skipped in the plugin logic for extracting address details.

I will create a bug report for the plugin shortly.

Implementation in Stripe

We should probably be using WC_Customer rather than direct access to the user data, but changing this is moot at the moment, as the plugin is not saving the data for the user or customer at this time.

Noting for reference that I've reported the issue in WooCommerce Address Book in crosspeaksoftware/woo-address-book#168.

It is possible that we may need to update our code to rely on WC_Customer, but it's not clear how the upstream bug is going to be addressed at this time, so I don't want to make any premature changes.

For now, I am going to close this issue, and we can work out whether we need to make any changes to maintain compatibility with the WooCommerce Address Book plugin.

Unfortunately, I have the same issue, without the WooCommerce Address Book. It started occurring with the latest update for a few customers, not all, for this reason I'm not able to reproduce it in our local environment.
We have the WooCommerce Subscriptions plugin active, no other Woo plugins, classic template, and "Enable Guest Accounts" enabled (and we won't to disable it).

We have the same issue happening to some customers only, without reliable reproduction steps. We also do not use the "WooCommerce Address Book" plugin.

The only way that I found to temporarily fix the problem is by adding this snippet to the theme's functions.php:

@ilyakop and @danieleperilli, what version(s) are you running? And are you seeing this when shoppers try to make purchases? Or when orders are made manually from wp-admin? Or something else? And is this happening for new buyers or logged-in users? Are they happening during checkout, on the pay for order page, or for any particular payment methods?

We addressed some issues for this in 9.8.1 via #4576, but that specifically handles orders that are created manually via wp-admin.

I'd love to learn more about how we're ending up with missing data for these cases, so any information you can share would be hugely helpful.
