Level Meter without input monitoring enabled?

Is it possible to use the Level Meter without input monitoring enabled? I already hear my inputs, because my interface passes its inputs to its outputs, but I have a headphone mix that adds system sounds to the sound from the inputs and enabling "input monitoring" in EasyEffects effectively adds another version of the inputs to this mix.

I am not sure I understood what you mean. By "Level Meter" do you mean the level meter plugin? And by "input monitoring" do you mean the one to test the effects applied to the microphone? These are two independent things. So I am confused.

Here's how it looks like, its the first time I'm using this level meter so I'm not sure I've configured it correctly. The plugin won't show anything or stop updating if the "input monitoring" button is disabled:

The plugin will only update its levels if audio is passing through the pipeline. The input monitoring forces this so that the user can test the effects. In general the pipeline will only be active when you have an audio recorder recording audio from EasyEffects virtual source. Do you have an app doing that?

Okay, so it's basically "lazy evaluating". I've just launched pw-record --target easyeffects_source /dev/null and the plugin indeed started to work. Thanks for explaining how it works!
