Datapoints arranged in an unstructured grid and being interested in teh spatial distribtion of them describes a problem in spatial transcriptomics as well as parts of geo. So the example linked above might have some nice applications in spatial genome/transcriptomics

FYI xoak aims to provide xarray wrappers for other tree index structures. So if there are other ones more useful for bio, we can add those there

I'm also really intruiged by the idea of tree index for keeping trackign of cell lineage, and keep track of today almost always requires a separate data structure to store, when it is really metadata connected to the array

this sounds liek a valuable avenue to explore. the :"indexes" really add extra metadata and let you extend the data model by a lot.
