set the date of a photo based on the file name

Some photos (e.g., screenshots) don't have the date stored in the embedded metadata when backed up. If I do a bulk upload, the files all have the same date as when they were uploaded. It would be helpful if the script parsed the file name and, if the name contains a date, set it in the photo info. This is similar to what a tool called exiftool does.
