How do I compile and release local openocd source code?

A good starting point is to check the project README files.

The docker images are fine, they are regular Ubuntu 18, nothing fancy there.

The problem is with xpm install, which does not install the actual binaries, it creates only the folders, but does not download the archives. In a normal situation, it should report the number of files unpacked from each archive.

It is very weird that it does not throw any error messages. :-(

To confirm this, I suggest you

• remove the .local/xPacks and .local/caches/xPacks folders
• edit the package.json and add -dd to the line which performs docker exec --user $(id -un) openocd-0.12.0-1.1-linux-x64 xpm install --config ... -dd
• rerun

This will add a lot of trace messages, perhaps they'll show something wrong.

But the general idea is that xpm cannot download the archives. If you use a proxy, you have to configure docker for it too, this is a common issue.

I just published xpm 0.15.2, which should improve error processing, in order to avoid using packages that failed to download the archive.

Please update xpm, remove the .local/xPacks, and retry.

Then I want to try again, but the container can't be deleted

There is not much I can do to help you with your internet, you have to retry until you can successfully download all archives. Later on they will be stored in the cache and xpm will no longer need to download them at each build.

As for the container, kill the hang process, or, at the limit, restart the machine.

Another possible workaround is to manually install those binary packages one by one, on the host machine (via commands like xpm install --global @xpack-dev-tools/[email protected]). This will populate the cache (shared by the container) and make the docker-prepare action faster and safer.
