Using pandoc parsers as a prototype for syntax highlighting

This is just an idea I had, that maybe using some of pandoc's readers is a good idea for syntax aware highlighting. Because it works as a parser, most markup languages can be highlighted pretty accurately. This also has the added benefit of fixing any parsing problems that pandoc may have.
