Is there any way to bring back old "new tab" behavior?

I prefer going to a homepage when creating a new tab rather than having to go to a webpage before the tab is created. Is there any setting to bring back this old functionality? I couldn't find one.

Please read the release notes. The config you are looking for is called: zen.urlbar.replace-newtab

Unless you are already familiar with the changes made from release to release, the release notes aren't really useful as a source of information. Unless you do, it's impossible to know which release might contain the feature you are looking for, and you would have to open the release notes for every single release since the first one that was made.

Release notes are great to know what changed before or after updating, but not really suited to looking things up..

This is very true. The reason I missed it is because I skipped multiple updates, so I had no clue which one caused the new behavior, and in order to find that I had to change about:config, I would have to fully expand multiple versions. This is also ignoring that somebody downloading the browser now, months after the update, might want to change this functionality and wouldn't know to go back months in the release notes to find the setting.

this really should be an option in the Settings, for a second there I seriously considered switching back to Firefox when I couldn't find anything related to this in the settings, and not everyone is going to go here and search for a solution or read release notes

I strongly agree. This should be an option in the setting. For me I like to open the new tab as sometimes I have bookmarks that I need to choose from the bookmark bar or use a pinned website from the new tab page.

@jasiralavi Agreed, it's a significant oversight in my eyes to not add this to the settings, when it is already implemented as a config option.

I had to roll back my installation a few weeks and forgo upgrading to avoid this "feature" It was a Big fail from a design standpoint

Modifying zen.urlbar.replace-newtab makes new tabs spawn in private mode now
