I am also in for horizontal tabs. Vertical tabs are a cool experiment for me but my brain can't wrap around them as I'm super used to horizontal ones.

Just one request I'd have would be to keep the option to use Icon only tabs (so similar to the vertical tabs) without pinning tabs. I think that would help with saving space in an horizontal tab bar too.

I thin the best would be is the instead of the URL box taking up a massive amount of space, it can be more streamlined and rest of the space used to display some of the current tabs centred on the active tab with the ability to scroll to both sides if needed.

Stumbled over Zen today and want to see horizontal Tabs as well.
And i hope they will be rather sleek/thin, similar to the Vivaldi ones. (In the best case also with some options like min/max width)

Thats currently the biggest issue that i have with it. Besides that, its the first Firefox Browser that actually feels good to use and that i consider switching to. Good job.

How? Do you have vertical and horizontal confused with each other? Vertical tabs have quite a few benefits over horizontal tabs:

• Most websites are designed for mobile, so vertical space is more valuable... which is in limited supply on widescreen laptops
• You can actually read what the tabs are if you're using vertical tabs and have more than 6 tabs
• The alt + b shortcut makes it easy to reclaim horizontal space if you are short on space in all directions

I wil try to expose my reasoning (talking about desktop)
Zen tries to focus solely on page content, and tabs are a second class citizen by minimizing it's visual impact/accessibility. Looking slightly up is more visual accessible than looking all the way through to the left, and also less accessible overall by having to move the cursor across the right side of the screen to the left (specially for right-handers).

With horizontal tabs you leverage the whole width of the widescreen to check more tabs at the same time including the first few characters to identify the webpage. The latest tab sits on the rightmost side of the tab bar, the usual area where the cursor lives (for right-handers).

For casual users this is ok, but for power users and specially researchers you will more likely end with a few dozens if not a few hundred tabs, and this layout optimizes tab management and screen usage.

I just switched from brave because MV3 broke Surfingkeys. Zen is an excellent browser, but the vertical tab bar is next to useless. I use Surfingkeys to switch tabs (which brings up its own list of tab titles), so it's not as much of a problem as it is for others, but I'd definitely prefer horizontal tabs.

Horizontal tabs is also a must here. Most screens are landscape and thus you have more room horizontally. Right now there is tons of wasted space in zen with over padded URL / nav area. It's insane that the old firefox I could streamline to a wicked tight setup for my netbook and these days you fight to get anything that isn't some jumbo Duplo block childs toy touch looking UI. UI these days sucks. Back to Waterfox and Palemoon.

As a cheeky side note why not be radical with your unneeded paradigm shift UI and make tabs DIAGONAL! :p On a serious note UI where you have to bounce your mouse all over the place is stupid. Tabs with the URL bar makes everything nice, tight and centralized. A UI that makes you mouse top to bottom on one side then left to right elsewhere is just the weird kid trying to convince you he's/she's not weird.

Keep the sides clean! Put everything at the top. It works better for websites like youtube/twitch/kick. Browsing a website is less of an issue than browsing a website with video players. The height is always enough, but the width - really - determines the size of the video player.

Also many of these websites have sidebars themselves, so it also looks kinda weird having the browsers sidebar next to it, but thats my opinion.

So a +1 for me for horizontal tabs. Even better - make it switchable between horizontal and vertical.

At the risk of sounding a bit condescending, wouldn't using Zen with horizontal tabs kinda just be using Firefox with extra steps? I'm a fan of horizontal tabs myself, but I don't knock Zen for not implementing them; I was always under the assumption that the whole ethos of Zen was "the vertical tab experience, cross-platform, based on Firefox."

I admit that Zen has a solid community filled with talented devs, and the whole Zen-mods thing as an ethical alternative to Opera's chokehold on the "ricing my browser" community is pretty dope, but there are add-ons for Firefox that can do similar things (take Firefox GX, for example). So, instead of asking for a feature to be implemented that already exists on other browsers, what is the motivation for not simply using those other browsers?

@DjangoZorro yes, but the search bar location already changes all the time for me both in Edge and Firefox due to all the buttons and permission/security icons to the left of it changing for every website.

I would suggest the option with horizontal tabs, as in Firefox Mod Blur. Like swap the search bar and tabs and make bookmarks (if present/enabled) automatically hide

P.S: Current "oneliner" looks like a mess in my opinion. I do not know how much space you guys save there and are ready to kill for the extra 10 vertical pixels, maybe it matters on <=24" 720p monitors, but people with >=27" 1440p monitors will not even feel the difference, except that now you have to look for the url/search bar among all the tabs for several minutes. In any case, it should be toggable between one/two/three liners.

Pretty sure this request is concerned with tabs, not bookmarks. Bookmarks don't need to be surfaced outside of the bookmark manager. Tabs do.

Also, tabs should be on the edge of the screen for easier selection (you can just move your mouse cursor along the edge of the monitor). It's harder to aim when they're placed like on your screenshot, for no real benefit.

Just saw your edit: you tell me to "train my aim," then admit that you need to spend several minutes looking for the address bar when it's very clearly differentiated from the other tabs. It's also not 10 pixels. It's dependent on the scaling.

+1 for horizontal tabs! I don't often share my PC, but I want to be able to do it. I just want a "normie layout" and a way to toggle it with simple instructions. alright i think im finally out. i waited months for this browser to get some sort of horizontal tabs. i forced my self to use it as it is for a month or two so maybe i can get use to it because i really liked the works that dev put to it. but now i really can't do this anymore. using vertical tabs for me who usually has less than 5 tabs open is just a no. anyways thanks to devs for the cool browser they made and good luck to all other people who waited for horizontal tabs like me for a very long time. i'll just go back to my custom CSS firefox setup.

@TFFC-Anoms12 Thank you for sharing! I will still use Firefox for now, in part because I prefer the single-row CSS I have now (left: firefox, right: zen)

and in part because browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab seems to no longer work in Zen, and I rely on that behavior.

Edit: Apparently browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab being broken is the intended behavior. #2537 is just painful to read.

15:30 - Installed Zen due to recommendation from friends and info on various sites.
15:32 - Checked for horizontal tabs and did a little research.
15:36 - Uninstalled Zen due to lack of customization for basic yet major UI options.

As someone coming from Firefox, I have to wonder if it was an active decision to limit users' choices or if there is a technical limitation. If it's the former, I left Microsoft and have always avoided Apple for just that reason. If it's the latter, best of luck in overcoming this hurdle. As for the people arguing that you only need vertical tabs or that it's more efficient; And? If the goals for Zen include increasing adoption, limiting customization is always counterproductive. There are also scenarios (portrait display, curated desktop work environments, docked windows, etc.) where vertical tabs use too much screen space and Zen simply cannot be used, regardless of its other benefits.

Thank you for an otherwise excellent browser. Competition and innovation is sorely needed in this space. Awesome work.

Not gonna lie, Zen browser is amazing!
But the absence of horizontal tabs forced me to use Brave, even though I don't like chromium based browsers. What can I do? It's the second best thing that I could find that satisfies my needs.

If Zen provides the option for horizontal tabs in future, I will switch to it without any doubt.
