Is it possible to try and recreate the Microsoft SharePoint marketing page as part of this hackathon? I know the rule says your own work which is why I wanted to ask.

yes - you can definitely take that as an inspiration for the design and then see how close you can get it. That page is of course a .com site, so the design for intranet's is a bit different. As a technical demo - yes.
