.7Z saves more space than .zip and only RetroArch's dosbox cores have issues with games in .7Z format, every other core works fine with zipped games supports .7z files at higher encryption rates. Especially on handheld devices with limited storage the extra few GB of space this creates can be a big deal. Even more so with the current storage crisis.
