Phase 16: Offline Conflict Resolution - COMPLETE ✅

Completion Date: October 26, 2024 Implementation Time: Single session with 50 parallel subagents Status: Production-ready


Executive Summary

Successfully implemented a comprehensive offline conflict resolution system for the collaborative grocery list application. The system provides intelligent conflict detection, automatic resolution for simple conflicts, and an intuitive manual resolution UI for complex cases. Users can now work offline seamlessly, with all changes synced and conflicts resolved automatically when they reconnect.


What Was Built

1. Core Conflict Resolution System

ConflictResolver Utility (src/utils/conflictResolver.ts)

  • Lines: 857 lines of TypeScript
  • Resolution Strategies:
    • ✅ Last-Write-Wins (timestamp-based)
    • ✅ Field-Level Merge (intelligent per-field resolution)

    • When both users increase quantity, use maximum value
    • Alternative: Sum both values (configurable)
  3. Concatenate Notes

    • When both users add notes, combine with separator
    • Preserves both contributions
  4. Last-Write-Wins for Other Fields

    • Use timestamp to pick winner for name, category
    • Simple and predictable
  5. Time-Based Auto-Resolution

    • If timestamps differ by >5 minutes, use last-write-wins
    • Rationale: Changes 5+ minutes apart likely unrelated
