Phase 29: Enhanced Drag & Drop Meal Planner - Complete Documentation

Overview

Phase 29 delivers a comprehensive drag-and-drop enhancement for the meal planner, transforming it into a highly interactive and intuitive meal planning experience. This phase implements advanced drag-and-drop functionality using native HTML5 APIs, comprehensive mobile touch support with long-press detection, and the ability to drag recipes directly from the recipe list onto the calendar.

Key Objectives Achieved

  1. Copy on Drag - Hold Ctrl/Cmd while dragging to copy meals instead of moving them
  2. Mobile Touch Support - Full touch event handling with long-press, drag preview, and haptic feedback
  3. Drag Recipes to Calendar - Drag recipes from RecipeList directly onto calendar slots
  4. Enhanced Visual Feedback - Custom drag ghost, pulsing animations, and clear visual states
  5. Accessibility - WCAG compliant with keyboard focus, high contrast mode, and reduced motion support

Features Implemented

1. Copy on Drag (Ctrl/Cmd + Drag)

Implementation:

  • Detects Ctrl (Windows/Linux) or Cmd (Mac) key during drag operations
  • Visual indicator with green glow shows copy mode is active
  • Creates duplicate meal plans while preserving all properties (recipe, servings, date)
  • Distinct from move operations (blue glow for move, green glow for copy)

User Experience:

  • Hold modifier key before starting drag
  • Green pulsing animation on drop zones indicates copy mode
  • Release to create duplicate meal plan
  • Original meal plan remains in place

Technical Details:

  • Checks e.ctrlKey and e.metaKey on drag events
  • Sets dataTransfer.effectAllowed to 'copy' or 'move'
  • Uses createMealPlan() mutation for copies instead of updateMealPlan()

2. Mobile Touch Support

Implementation:

How to Use the New Features

Moving a Meal (Desktop)

  1. Click and hold on any filled meal slot
  2. Drag it to another day or meal type
  3. Release to move the meal to the new position
  4. The meal will disappear from the original slot and appear in the new slot

Copying a Meal (Desktop)

  1. Hold Ctrl (Windows/Linux) or Cmd (Mac)
  2. Click and drag a meal slot
  3. Notice the green glow on drop zones indicating copy mode
  4. Release to create a duplicate meal
  5. Both the original and the copy will now exist

Adding Recipe to Calendar (Desktop)

  1. Navigate to the Recipes view
  2. Drag any recipe card from the list
  3. Drag it over the meal planner calendar
  4. Drop it onto any day/meal type combination
  5. A new meal plan is created automatically with default servings

Mobile Usage

  1. Long-press (500ms) on a meal slot
  2. Feel the vibration feedback indicating drag has started
  3. Drag your finger to the desired position
  4. See the preview following your finger
  5. Release to drop the meal in the new slot
  6. Feel vibration on successful drop

Tips for Mobile:

  • Keep your finger still during the initial 500ms long-press
  • If you move too much during long-press, it will cancel
  • The drag preview shows what you're moving
  • Drop zones highlight when you hover over them

  6. No keyboard drag - Drag-and-drop requires mouse or touch (no keyboard alternative)

Potential Issues

Data Validation
