Flac 24/96 to 16/44,1 #783

have you then re ran the lossless file again through freeac with only the
desired bit rate? being already 24/44.1 then to 16/44.1?
Being flac it'll then be the desired 16/44 & no worse of in quality.
Yeah a pain if doing batches or regularly (20 files a day for eg) but for a
1 off.
If you don't already have, instal MEDIA INFO, you can (via contextual menu)
check all the files meta data also run the file through SPEK &/or SPECTRO
to confirm its data is correct, not upscaled etc.
Not being the dev, nor having the desire to lower a 24/96 if a vinyl rip
for eg, I can't say its a bug or intentional - the file maybe large/long,
thus freeac unable to wisely do both....

Yep, it "should" do all, SHOULD :)
Ok, IF only 1 large, very long audio file, then maybe that's excusable and
thus "ok" (ish) to do it in 2 passes but nope, a ripped album, nah, it
should do the lot in 1 go. With ease, on any machine that can run it tbh.
fre:ac i've used for over a decade, converting all formats to FLAC or FLAC
to mp3 320 - large batches (of course never mp3 to lossless thats just meh)
but 24/96 and higher 0.0 to both FLAC 16/44 (to put on a heavily modded
upgraded iPOD photo with 1 TB of storage and a non apple os to play FLAC
and mp3 320 to put on mobile phone or microssd to play in the car.
EVERYTHING I rip has a duplicate mp3 320 of its FLAC sibling.
IF Vinyl or a SACD it'll be first to WAV then to HQ FLAC (keep) then to
FLAC 16/44 AND mp3 320 (bit of a geek on music) :P - far too much to listen
to and read to watch TV.
But yep, Had some oddities with fre:ac. Due to not noticing my OS's
harddrive had filled up (thanks Windows 11 for knocking out marvel drivers
so a haddrive expansion card is no longer recognised - i had a scratch
drive for downloading duties to save m.2/ssd writing, even though not the
same wear n tear as sata, just a habit.... until Win 11... (grr hate).
Only other thing I can think is duplicate the file to another driver,
insure it has a short directory, not D://LONG FOLDER Name/ After LONG
FOLDER Name/After LONG FOLDER Name/ etc / Long Album Name / Long Track
names
I'm terrible, with certain (mostly on the elevtronic side of music) when I
collect Labels, i'll have [Catalognumber] Artist - year - Album name
(Publisher) Mediatype* [FLAC]
* eg CD or 2xCD or CD Box Set / WEB / 2xVinyl 24/96 etc and if a Japanese
import, often that included also, making it hard for Windows 256 character
limit to even read the track (Tagscanner luckily highlights the file until
it's directory listing has been shortened - even using tools to extend the
256 character (again thanks to Win 11) that's no longer possible - OSX does
have a lot of features (& apps I bought way back when) I miss but Apple no
longer has anything I want to give them money for.
Thus fre:ac, tagscanner, spek, spectro + media info (ALL free) are all I
need for my tag n rip duties. Oh and cue splitter for ... splitting ripped
albums into individual tracks (dunno why people don't do this prior to
sharing after spending a small fortune on decks/needles/amps/DAC's and
capture tools + the vinyl to then fall short at the part that matters to
the listener, ease of use... unless the entire A/B side or CD is a
continuous piece or Live.... (the older version, in fact i think even the
dev has reverted to that, the new 1 is "fussy".
…-----
itunes 9.2.2 (came out in 2010 ! and I do have it installed on my PC atm,
for the modded iPod for formatting drives - i intend on finding the black
U2 variant of the iPod as it had a superior DAC + I have a White 1, a black
1 for "other" music (though you can buy coloured shells and scroll wheels
anyway... its the DAC and its already "modded" - may swap the wheels over
for "just cos"...).
So 2010 was around the the time I said enough and stopped with Apple (It
was obvious where they were going, a closed ecosystem, proprietary to a
fault, the EXACT opposite to their old slogan of "Think Different" or
"Outside of the Box" : which is exactly what they did and have continued to
do : get people invested in 1 product and unable to branch out to anything
other than an another apple product without serious intent and time and
effort from the user....)
Thus having owned a Pismo Laptop, then a graphite iMac SE (almost worth
what I paid for it 2nd hand now, the Pismo even more) then the 1st Mac Mini
(& iPod 60g Photo - man the mechanical micro/mini sata 60gig drive in that
was a work of engineering genius) and then & lastly I bought the first 24"
flat screen iMac (still a stunning image, intended to use the panel and
it's frame minus the outdated innards, but the parts, especially now, would
be more than a n entry level 24" monitor which would have a better
image.... - I still have all 4, may sell 1 or 2 and mod what remains, have
ideas (Rasperry pi, convery the iMac into a portable Bass speaker, with a
17" bass bin where the screen was (but maybe I'll sell a working iMac and
buy a broken/iMac shell...
Anway after much hassle with OSX (as I like to hack the beep out of my Os
and hardware) I'd had enough of it always needed fixing, reinstalling or
simply crashing thus jumped to Windows 7 and it was never more stable a
system, 10 was better (after tweaking...) but beside losing a few Apple
only (non apple dev'd) utilities, after much seeking I found alternatives
and hacks and crowbars to make Windows 10 exactly as I liked, streamlined
my music tagging and cataloging and making etc - which Win 11 came along
and did and still does desperately attempt to disrupt years and years of
"polishing", had to even use WUB from sordum dot org (Windows Update
Blocker) to remain on 24H2 which prevented PAID for apps from even working
!! but still, never went back to apple, never will unless Wozniak takes the
reins (again).
I may (thx win 11) likely jump ship but OS only to a distro, to Nobara or
Mint, likely the former, as linux has come a long long way in the distro
world.
Ideally I'd run both but... Win 11 (of course) doesn't play nicely with
multi boot systems using Ventoy for example.
I even have 2 x Win 11's installed on 2x different M.2's, just in case,
somehow, Microsoft/Windows (as it did) bypass the blocking, I had Win 10
blocking Win 11, running perfectly as I liked it, constantly insuring the
"pushback" updating was like clockwork enabled but somehow, despite
continually putting it back, it snuck past and installed itself...
I can't stand Win 11.
So much removed and a LOT of junk unrequested, nobody asked for shoved in
our face (even had to reinstall Wordpad as I use notepad++ but for a quick
rtf file that is punctuated etc notepad is useless. So thats gone too along
with copilot and all manner of rubbish (gamebar etc) All easily uninstalled
at a click of a button using WINHANCE (made by a chap nicknamed memory (as
his you tube channel, thus easy instructional vids to help or (OR) the
mighty CHRIS TITUS'S TOOL... hmm may have worded that better. BUT NEVER use
the 2 utilities together, not wise, I found out :D
Jobs was merely a dodgy car salesman, Woz was the real genius on hardware
and softwares sides.
The guy who actually wrote the original Apple OS got paid something akin to
barely a few months rent for it (and was hard up hence selling so cheaply)
- nothing close to what it help make Apple become without his hard work.
Jobs actually sold the very first (Steve Wozniak built) Apple pc without an
OS, as said, when he found one Jobs paid the guy a pittance for it - Woz
made him "whole" though, a few years later. Unlike Jobs, who was a
massive SHI#, eh, JOB.
The Pismo Laptop was so innovative for its era, similar in kind to the
current Framework Laptops but 2 decades before.
I would love to buy a Framework laptop but they are not cheap and beside my
current pc being faster than anything they currently have, that was quite
enough expense, despite sourcing all at cheapest as poss and building it
(5070ti/7800X3D/32GB ram/ and an embarrassingly massive storage of over 30
TBacross 3 M.2, 2 SSD's & 8 SATA drives (would be 10 if it werent for the
marvell driver issue... hope it gets fixed or I find a workd around or just
build a server / nas out of my previous PC which will either be in an old
but cool CoolerMaster Cosmos Mk1 or the Cosmos 1000, likely the all
aluminium 1 as it looks so good, the black 1 is larger, i think i could
rent it out as an AirBNB....)
anyway sorry to waffle on. I hav so much to do today, in fact all week....
what am I doing?!?! :D
TL;DR (dont blame you):-
Hope you get help with this issue or better still find a solution yourself,
cos thats just chef's kiss.
Take it easy.

Hi, I understand, no the initial file was 24/96. I'm trying fre:ac and I
wanted to test various solutions. And the result was a 24/44.1 file. Even
though I set 16/44.1 in the DSP settings.
Reading what you wrote, I was trying to transform not one but 14 files.
I have to do more tests.
Then I wanted to keep fre:ac as the only program for ripping and editing
files and not add other programs.
Thanks

Hi, @Turk303 |

Hi @Nagras62, You need to change the order of the sample rate conversion and sample format conversion in the DSP configuration. The sample rate conversion is being done in 32 bit float, so if the sample format is converted to 16 bit before that, it will just be converted back up to 32 bit again for the sample rate conversion. Therefore, the sample rate conversion needs to happen first. You can simply drag the Sample Rate Converter entry above the Sample Format Converter in the DSP configuration dialog. |
Uh oh!
There was an error while loading. Please reload this page.
I'm having a problem editing a FLAC file. I select the file on my PC and want to reduce both the bit rate and sample rate. The file I receive is reduced only in sample rate, but not in bit rate. I use "sample converter" and "sample rate converter." The fre:ac version is 1.1.7 (20260412) and the FLAC is 1.5.0. I'm using Windows 11.
Thanks in advance
