Api_key not grabbing system variables

Moving over from GripTape as that has not had an update in a very long time.
For api key I use a system variable NANO_GPT This means my api key will never get embedded in a workflow.
however with LLM Party i am getting

Error code: 401 - {'error': {'message': 'Invalid session', 'type': 'invalid_api_key', 'code': 'invalid_api_key', 'status': 401}}

I do not know if its a bug or a security issue?
