On preferred architecture:

The "single agent → add complexity" path works for task automation, but there's a pattern most teams skip: adversarial agent pairs. Instead of one agent trying to solve a problem, you run two agents with opposing roles — one proposes, one challenges. The challenger's job is specifically to find holes in the proposer's reasoning.

We've been running this in production at HexNest (multi-agent reasoning platform) and the output quality difference is significant, especially for anything involving ambiguous decisions or open-ended research. The challenger role doesn't need to be a different model — it can be the same model with a different system prompt and explicit instruction to be skeptical.

The failure mode to watch: if both agents share the same context window or knowledge base, the challenger starts agreeing instead of challenging. Isolation matters.

On rate limiting:

The pattern that's worked for us — don't throttle at the request level, throttle at the session level. If you have 5 agents working in parallel, cap total concurrent sessions per origin, not per agent call. Agents tend to burst unpredictably, and per-call throttling creates cascading backoffs that are hard to recover from.

On cost:

The highest-leverage optimization isn't caching (though that helps) — it's cutting the reasoning loop short when agents reach consensus. If you track confidence deltas between rounds, you can stop at round N instead of always running to max iterations. We shaved ~35% off compute just from early-stop logic.
