After installing the BookwormPup32 update dated 09/01/2026, my system freezes immediately when I try to reboot. I did some troubleshooting and wanted to share what I found, in case it helps identify the cause.
Symptom:
The system freezes right after selecting "reboot" — whether from the graphical menu or by typing reboot in a terminal (as root). A hard power reset is required every time.
What I've ruled out:
Not a GRUB issue — the freeze happens after selecting reboot, not during boot, and the system boots normally otherwise.
Not the graphics driver — tested with nomodeset, no change.
Not X itself — stopping X before rebooting doesn't help.
Not wifi/bluetooth — used rfkill block all before rebooting, no change.
Not a full kernel hang — running echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger reboots the machine instantly, so the kernel itself can still trigger a reboot; something in the normal shutdown sequence is hanging before that point.
What works:
Booting into "Safe mode without X" from the GRUB Advanced menu — reboot works fine from there.
Booting the previous version (01/08/2026) from a CD-R (frugal install) — reboot works perfectly, no freeze at all.
This strongly suggests a regression was introduced in the 01/09/2026 update, related to something that only loads in normal (non-safe) mode with X — possibly a driver or service that isn't releasing properly during shutdown, though I haven't pinned down exactly which one yet.
I'm currently running the 08/01/2026 build to keep working normally. Happy to provide more logs or test anything if it helps track this down — just let me know what would be useful.
