JSDoc Documentation Integration - Implementation Summary

Overview

Successfully integrated JSDoc documentation querying into the Snap.svg introspection library, allowing programmatic access to method signatures, parameters, descriptions, and return values.

What Was Implemented

1. Documentation Reader Library ✅

File: utils/introspection/snap-docs-reader.js

Features:

  • ✅ UMD module (works in browser and Node.js)
  • ✅ Loads documentation.json from file or URL
  • ✅ Indexed lookups for fast queries
  • ✅ Find classes, methods, and members
  • ✅ Extract signatures, parameters, return values
  • ✅ Full-text search capabilities
  • ✅ Smart pattern matching for method names

API Functions:

// Loading
SnapDocsReader.load(dataOrUrl)

// Finding
SnapDocsReader.findClass(className)
SnapDocsReader.findMethod(className, methodName)
SnapDocsReader.findClassMethods(className)

// Extracting
SnapDocsReader.getSignature(doc)
SnapDocsReader.getDescription(doc)
SnapDocsReader.getParams(doc)
SnapDocsReader.getReturns(doc)

// Searching
SnapDocsReader.search(query)
SnapDocsReader.getAllClasses()

2. Command-Line Query Tool ✅

  • ✅ Clear "NEW" badges for visibility

5. Updated Documentation ✅

File: utils/introspection/README.md

Additions:

  • ✅ SnapDocsReader API reference
  • ✅ Browser and Node.js usage examples
  • ✅ CLI tool documentation
  • ✅ Architecture explanation
  • ✅ Complete API function list

How It Works

Data Flow

1. JSDoc → documentation.json (via grunt docs:json)
2. documentation.json → SnapDocsReader.load()
3. SnapDocsReader → Indexed lookups
4. Query → Find class/method → Extract docs
5. Display in HTML or CLI

Integration with Introspection

// Introspection extracts method names
const data = SnapIntrospection.extractAll({Snap, eve, mina});

// Documentation reader finds docs for each method
data.classes.classNames.forEach(className => {
  classData.methods.forEach(methodName => {
    const docs = SnapDocsReader.findMethod(className, methodName);
    const signature = SnapDocsReader.getSignature(docs);
    // Display signature + docs
  });
});

Usage Examples

Browser - Show Method with Docs

<script src="snap-docs-reader.js"></script>
<script>
SnapDocsReader.load('../../doc/json/documentation.json')
  .then(() => {
    const docs = SnapDocsReader.findMethod('Element', 'attr');
    const signature = SnapDocsReader.getSignature(docs);
    const params = SnapDocsReader.getParams(docs);

    console.log('Signature:', signature);
    console.log('Parameters:', params);
  });
</script>

Node.js - Query Documentation

const fs = require('fs');
const SnapDocsReader = require('./snap-docs-reader.js');

// Load
const data = JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync('../../doc/json/documentation.json'));
SnapDocsReader.load(data);

// Query
const attrDoc = SnapDocsReader.findMethod('Element', 'attr');
console.log('Signature:', SnapDocsReader.getSignature(attrDoc));
console.log('Description:', SnapDocsReader.getDescription(attrDoc));

const params = SnapDocsReader.getParams(attrDoc);
params.forEach(p => {
  console.log(`- ${p.name}: ${p.description}`);
});

CLI - Browse Documentation

# Find Element class
$ node query-docs.js --class Element
============================================================
Class: Element
============================================================

Description:
Main Element class for SVG elements...

Methods (45):
  - attr(params: Object|string) → Element
  - animate(params: Object) → Element
  - ...

# Find specific method
$ node query-docs.js --class Element --method attr --verbose
============================================================
Element.attr
============================================================

Signature:
  attr(params: Object|string, [value]) → Element

Description:
  Gets or sets attributes of the element.

Parameters:
  - params: Object|string - Attribute name or object with key-value pairs
  - [value] - Attribute value (when params is string)

Returns:
  Type: Element
  Returns the element for chaining

Key Features

1. Indexed Lookups 🚀

  • Pre-builds indexes by name, longname, kind, memberof
  • Fast O(1) lookups instead of O(n) searches
  • Handles ~4000+ documentation items efficiently

2. Smart Pattern Matching 🎯

  • Tries multiple patterns: Class#method, Class.prototype.method, Class.method
  • Falls back to member search if exact match fails
  • Handles JSDoc inconsistencies

3. Rich Signature Extraction 📝

  • Extracts parameter names and types
  • Handles optional parameters with [brackets]
  • Includes return type information
  • Format: methodName(param1: Type, [param2: Type]) → ReturnType

4. Interactive UI 🖱️

  • Click to expand/collapse documentation
  • Visual badges for documentation status
  • Brief descriptions always visible
  • Full docs on demand

5. Graceful Fallback 💪

  • Works even if documentation.json not available
  • Shows status indicator
  • Still displays method names and signatures from introspection
  • Encourages running grunt docs:json

Testing

Browser Test

  1. Generate docs: grunt docs:json
  2. Open demos/introspection/show_methods_with_docs.html
  3. Verify:
    • ✅ Documentation status shows "loaded successfully"
    • ✅ Methods show 📖 badges
    • ✅ Brief descriptions appear under methods
    • ✅ Clicking methods expands documentation
    • ✅ Parameters and return values display
